GRIOT SOUNDS OF MALI

by Oroma | May 5th, 2010 | 1 Comment

In line with my recent trip to Mali, Pop’Africana’s contributing editor at Large and music lover Seth Markle , has compiled an audio compilation of Malian sounds for your enjoyment. All singers are coming out of Mali; all are of the griot tribe or heavily influenced by its traditions.
The griots of Mali are dedicated followers of ancient kings of Mali.
They are soothsayers and are known to understand the history of the land more than any other tribe in Mali.
An interesting piece of new that we learned while in Mali is that that all singers from Mali are griots.
We even had a honor of meeting Habib Koite while in Mali- a short meeting, nevertheless interesting and fulfiling. Mr. Koite immediately as expected started to teach us the sounds attached to Malian names and the naming process in Mali

Enjoy.
