Transition’s 50th Anniversary

One of my favorite issues of Transition magazine is issue 79. In it contains a review of a collection of essays authored by the late African American novelist and essayist James Baldwin. But it is the photographs of Baldwin by Sedat Pakay that stood out to me. One is of him sitting outside a café in the Algerian community of Paris with his legs crossed and hands caressing a hookah as he deeply inhales tobacco. Another is of Baldwin fully immersed in the creative process: oversized dark-rimmed glasses, a lit cigarette with a hanging ash, a typewriter, and desk lamp illuminating a face of deep concentration. Like many others, I was impressed by the subject matter and how it was presented. I’ve had the pleasure of coming across various Transition issues usually at random moments in time yet I can still vividly remember these encounters because of the quality of the magazine’s content.
